Anurag Kashyap had a fascinating conversation with Komal Nahta and opened up about the struggles of making Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat (2023), starring Karan Mehta, Alaya F and Sapna Pabbi.
Anurag Kashyap reveals: “Reliance DUMPED Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat…Vishal Bhardwaj, Rajkumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali helped me; Hirani edited the film for 2 weeks!”
Anurag said, “Mid-way, during the making of Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat, Reliance dumped us. We shot 50% of the film. I was wondering what I should do. This is when I showed the film to Vishal Bhardwaj, Rajkumar Hirani and Imtiaz Ali. They all helped me. Vishal told me to structure the film in a certain way and add a sutradhar. Based on that suggestion, I called up Vicky Kaushal. I asked him, ‘Will you give me 4 days? I want you to do the role of sutradhar. But I don’t have money’.”
Anurag continued, “As for Raju Hirani, he sat and edited the film for 2 weeks! He told me, ‘What you are trying to convey with the film is beautiful’. He knew I was not able to shoot more as I had no money. He edited the film in a certain way and gave the film a structure. Imtiaz also gave me some ideas. Some of the dialogues of Vicky Kaushal were derived from Vishal Bhardwaj, Gulzar and many others. Everyone came together to help me and ensure that it sees the light of day. After all, a lot of people are involved in a film.”
Anurag further said, “That’s the reason so many people have been thanked in the opening disclaimers. They all helped me. Similarly, the whole industry stood with us when we fought the Censor Board during the release of Udta Punjab (2016). That was the last time the industry got united.”
In a rapid-fire round, Anurag was also asked who was the most popular Khan out of the three. He said, “Shah Rukh Khan is the most popular, followed by Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan is the hardest-working and shrewdest of all 3, as a producer (smiles).”
