In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood, celebrities are under the public gaze, whether for good or bad. From the controversies to the screenings of a new celebrity show, they just get as much attention. One such example of this is Aryan Khan’s arrest in 2021. Son of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Aryan found himself in the middle of a high-profile drug case that created a buzz for weeks. Now, with the release of his much-anticipated Netflix debut series The Ba*ds of Bollywood, audiences cannot help but draw parallels between the fictional narrative and real-life events. The internet is blowing up with reactions, and many are speculating that Aryan might have taken an indirect dig at ex-NCB officer Sameer Wankhede, the man who arrested him.
What did we see in the show?
In the first episode of Aryah’s show, we saw a dramatic scene of a rave party where an officer storms in and catches a man smoking a a joint. However, after finding that this man is not linked to Bollywood, he loses interest and lets him go. Later, he finds another man, who was just sipping a drink, but because he had a Bollywood background, he gets arrested on the spot.
Netizens who are quick to notice everything got stuck on this sequence and were quick to react. Many viewers pointed out the striking similarities between the reel and real incident. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “The Sameer Wankhede cameo in The Ba*ds of Bollywood is too good lol. Iykyk (sic).” Another said, “Sameer Wankhede in the first episode, and he is sounding exactly like him (sic).” Adding humour to the debate, a third user posted, “SAMEER WANKHEDE is gonna have a blast watching this.”
The Real-Life Context
For those who don’t know, Aryan Khan was arrested on October 3, 2021, along with Ayaaz Merchant and Munmun Dhamecha during a raid on a cruise ship. The NCB, led by officer Sameer Wankhede, claimed to have found banned drugs and charged all three of them with possession, consumption, and sale/purchase. As a result, Aryan had to spend 25 days in jail before being granted bail. By May 2022, all charges against him were dropped, and Wankhede himself was removed from the case due to allegations of blackmail.
