Not many are aware but Ramesh Sippy’s comeback film, Shimla Mirchi, quietly released in cinemas in 2020. It had an interesting star cast – Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh and the Dream Girl, Hema Malini. Sadly, the film was lying in the cans for nearly 4-5 years after which it was released without any proper publicity. Ramesh Sippy talked about this token release of his film during an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.
EXCLUSIVE: Ramesh Sippy admits his comeback film Shimla Mirchi “was NOT properly released”; explains why it should have released in 2025: “Rajkummar Rao is now a STAR; had it released after Stree 2, it would have been a different story”
Ramesh Sippy said, “Yes, it was not properly released. It came out in COVID. It was impossible (to get people) during that period. But for some reason, the distributor decided to release it then. It was a wrong decision.”
He said that in today’s time, Shimla Mirchi’s prospects would have been brighter, “Today, Rajkummar Rao is a star. They waited to release the film. They should have waited a little longer. Stree and Stree 2 came out in the last few years. Had they released after the release of those two films, it would have been a different story!”
What went in favour of Shimla Mirchi was that it didn’t look dated. Those who were unaware would have never guessed that the romcom, which came out in 2020, was shot in 2014-15. Ramesh Sippy agreed, “No, it didn’t seem dated. Also, thematically, it was a little forward.”
The writer complained that the publicity material didn’t even mention ‘From the director of Sholay’. It may have enticed people to check out the film in cinemas. Ramesh Sippy disagreed with this idea, “That shouldn’t have been done. It would have raised a lot of expectations. This was a different kind of film. Sholay was an action-adventure film. Shimla Mirchi was a sweet little film; a comedy of errors (smiles).”
Shimla Mirchi is the story of a young lad (Rajkummar Rao) in love with a pretty café owner (Rakul Preet Singh). Afraid to express his feelings, he decides to write a letter to her. Trouble arises when the girl’s mother (Hema Malini) receives the letter, assuming it’s for her, and falls for the lad.
