Maddock Films’ recently-released Thamma, which is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, saw some fine performances from the likes of Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But despite their presence, Rachit Singh also managed to get noticed through his character of the menacing Veeran, one of the Betaals in the film.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rachit said that he is happy with the response his character has received. “It’s a very big film to be a part of from Maddock Horror Comedy Universe,” he said. “And to play a prominent character means a lot. The response has been very good. It’s just the start and you are getting a chance of being part of a big franchise. Maddock has been a wonderful production house to work with and actors from Ayushmann to Rashmika to Nawaz bhai to Faisal and so many other actors and getting associated with Amar Kaushik and Aditya Sarpotdar, it’s as big as anything for me.”
Rachit has been working as an acting coach and has trained the likes of Saiyaara star Aneet Padda and Shanaya Kapoor. But he got his first proper break as an actor in Thamma. In a recent interview, he had said that he had to wait 10 years to get the break.
Speaking about how those 10 years were for him, he said, “Of course, I came to the city to become an actor and you realize over a period of time that you have to learn your craft and figure out finances, so you can stay in the city. So, I started assisting people, learning workshops, started giving workshops, etc. So, in these 10 years, I was working every day. I was closer to acting. So, of course, it was helping me a lot to grow as an actor and person. I got to see all these actors to work and I was a part of great movies and stories. I was working with a lot of good directors.”
He added, “At the same time, I was working on my acting and myself and giving auditions. But in my head, I was not expecting to be a part of such a big film. I just wanted to get a break and start my acting career. My only motto was to get up and work. And your work will get you work. Of course, it took me 10 years to get my first break. But if I sit and reflect on it, I still feel it has been an amazing journey, where I learnt so much as an actor and person.”
Rachit revealed that the nature of his co-stars helped him a lot in Thamma. “Whether it was Ayushmann, Rashmika or Nawaz bhai, they are approachable as people and they are so warm,” he said. “For a person like me, who is a newcomer, it suddenly becomes easier. All your nervousness goes away. You are able to talk to them, discuss scenes, etc. And they are so receptive. After being such big stars and having such a big career, they are still being nice. It was a very humbling experience for me.”
Playing a Betaal needed Rachit, along with the actors playing co-Betaals, give menacing expressions with those long and scary teeth. However, he said that that wasn’t a major challenge for him.
“Amar (Kaushik) sir and Aditya sir told me from day one that they want me to transform my body first,” he said. “Veeran is a monstrous character. They said that the moment anyone looks at my character, they should feel that he comes from that world. They said that people should be scared of my look. They said that they have kept my character very stoic and scary. It took me 9 months of body transformation to become Veeran. Of course, I was working out regularly before. But when I signed the film, I was not so big with muscles and abs. My body shots were at the end of the schedule, so it gave me a lot of time to prep.”
As Rachit has entered the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, will he be a part of the forthcoming films from the universe? “I hope so,” he said. “I am a Betaal, so I can be there. I think it totally depends on my makers. Fingers crossed. Anything can happen in our horror comedy universe.”
