The 1991 thriller 100 Days, starring Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, is being revived as a web series by producer Jay Mehta, with new twists and a modern edge.
It was some 34 years ago. A film starring stars like Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, and Moon Moon Sen captivated Bollywood audiences. It was a psychological thriller that sent chills through theater audiences, leaving many screaming. Directed by Partho Ghosh, the film, titled 100 Days, cost a mere 95 lakh rupees at the time, but grossed 8.9 crore rupees at the box office.
You might be wondering why we’re suddenly discussing this film today! In fact, the film’s producer, Jay Mehta, is now adapting this classic cult film into a web series. The story will feature new characters and new twists, reflecting contemporary times.
Inspired by Global Classics
Released in 1991, 100 Days was originally a remake of the 1984 Tamil superhit Noorvathu Naal, which itself was inspired by the 1977 Italian classic Sette Note in Nero (The Psychic) and the Hollywood thriller Eyes of Laura Mars. The film tells the story of a young woman who experiences visions of a murder while asleep. Disturbed by these premonitions, she attempts to uncover the cause. The story later reveals that there’s a serial killer.
Abhishek Kumar and Srishti Singh in the Lead Roles
According to a report in India Today, nearly three decades after the film’s release, Jai Mehta is developing a web series based on the film. Abhishek Kumar and Srishti Singh will star in the lead roles. Shooting for the series is reportedly nearly complete, and it will be released by the end of this year. Interestingly, it will stream as a micro-drama on Amazon MX Player’s vertical platform, MX Fatafat.
New Twists for a Modern Audience
Keeping modern audiences in mind, the series’ story has been modified. However, the makers have retained the mystery and thrill of the original film. Jai Mehta says, “I made the film 100 Days, which was based on premonitions. Now, we are bringing it as a web show with a new twist. Our aim is to connect it with today’s generation, which views and understands stories differently.”
The Story of ‘100 Days’
The film begins with a young woman named Devi (Madhuri Dixit) who suddenly experiences visions of impending events and accidents. Devi has a premonition of her sister Rama’s (Moon Moon Sen) murder. This disturbs her. Her college friends Sudha Mathur (Sabeeha) and Sunil (Javed Jaffrey) try to help her through this ordeal, but to no avail. Devi finds solace after talking to her sister. However, shortly thereafter, Rama is murdered in the same manner she had imagined.
The Mystery Deepens
The killer hides Rama’s body in the wall of a mansion. Devi learns that Rama has gone missing. She tries to convince everyone that Rama is dead, but no one believes her. Five years later, Devi moves into her uncle’s (Ajit Vachani) home and marries Ram. The two move into the family’s ancestral mansion, the same one where Rama’s body is buried. Devi experiences another set of visions, haunted by premonitions. This time, she sees skeletons. She breaks open a wall and finds one.
Thrills, Suspense, and the Hunt for the Killer
The story continues to escalate, with thrills, suspense, and tension building. But the biggest question remains: who is the killer who took Rama’s life? Amidst the police investigation, Devi’s premonitions, and the revelation that he’s a serial killer, you’ll have to watch the film to find out. By the way, you can also watch the film 100 Days on Prime Video before the web series releases.
