Sunny Deol’s latest venture, “Gadar 2,” is proving to be an unstoppable force at the box office, showcasing no signs of slowing down as it enters its third day of release. The movie, directed by Anil Sharma, enjoyed a smashing Sunday, amassing an estimated collection of Rs 52 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. This achievement marked the highest single-day earnings for “Gadar 2” so far, following its equally remarkable opening day collection of Rs 40 crore and its successful Saturday earnings of Rs 43 crore.
With the substantial boost in Sunday’s collections, “Gadar 2” concluded its opening weekend with an impressive total of Rs 135 crore. According to trade experts, the film is now poised to maintain a steady collection on Monday and then gear up for another surge on Tuesday, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. This holiday boost is expected to effortlessly propel “Gadar 2” past the Rs 200 crore milestone.
To put things into perspective, even though Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster “Pathaan” debuted with a Wednesday release on January 25, it took the film three days to accumulate around Rs 161 crore in its Hindi version. Notably, the film’s second day, boosted by Republic Day, recorded an all-time high single-day collection of Rs 68 crore net. Over its extended five-day opening weekend, “Pathaan” garnered Rs 271 crore.
Remarkably, “Gadar 2” achieved remarkable success despite a clash with Akshay Kumar’s “OMG 2,” which resulted in limited screenings, especially in multiplexes. The film has already become the crowning achievement of Sunny Deol’s illustrious 40-year career. Despite having delivered hits like “Betaab” in 1983 and the original “Gadar” in 2001, “Gadar 2” now stands as his highest-grossing blockbuster.
Expressing his joy about the exceptional box office performance of “Gadar 2,” Sunny Deol shared, “I am genuinely overjoyed. When we embarked on the second part of Gadar, we couldn’t have anticipated the immense love it would receive from the audience. Two whole generations have passed since the release of the first Gadar, yet the enthusiasm remains as strong as it was back then. I am astonished and extremely happy. The film industry needs successful films to thrive.”
The extraordinary demand for “Gadar 2” prompted many exhibitors to add new screenings, including late-night and early-morning showtimes. Bollywood Hungama reported, “Due to the film’s overwhelming popularity, capacity constraints have emerged, given that it had to share screens with ‘OMG 2.’ However, moviegoers are unwilling to wait until weekdays or the following week to watch ‘Gadar 2.’ They are eager to experience the film immediately, which is expected to lead to additional screenings and create history.”
Directed by Anil Sharma, “Gadar 2” also features Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma, with the late Amrish Puri’s character brought to life using CGI technology. As a sequel to the 2001 hit “Gadar,” this installment is set in the 1970s and follows the journey of Tara Singh (played by Sunny Deol) to Pakistan as he endeavors to rescue his son.
